The three-year B.Sc. Nautical Science program, conducted under Vels University, is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Government of India. Upon successful completion of the course and 12 months of approved sea service, cadets become eligible for the Second Mate (Foreign-Going) Certificate of Competency, allowing them to serve as Navigating Officers on merchant vessels worldwide.

The curriculum is carefully structured to deliver a strong foundation in nautical subjects, along with extensive practical and hands-on training. Eligibility Criteria – B.Sc. Nautical Science

Academic Requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed 10+2 or an equivalent qualification with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM), securing a minimum of 60% overall in PCM. In addition, at least 50% marks in English should have been obtained in either Class 10 or Class 12.
Qualifying the IMU Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) is mandatory for admission.

Age Criteria

The upper age limit is 25 years as on the date of commencement of the course.
Age relaxation for SC/ST candidates will be applicable as per DGS norms.

Medical Fitness Standards

Candidates must meet the medical fitness requirements for sea service as prescribed by maritime authorities.

  • Distance vision: 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the other eye

  • No colour vision deficiency

  • Overall physical fitness suitable for shipboard duties

How to Apply

Admission to DGS-approved maritime institutes is granted through the IMU Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET). Appearing for and qualifying this examination is mandatory for all eligible candidates.
