Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) Course Eligibility, Age Limit & Selection Process

If you want to pursue a career as an Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) in the Merchant Navy, you must meet the following eligibility criteria before applying.


Educational Qualification for ETO Course

1️⃣ 10+2 Academic Requirement

Candidates must have completed Senior Secondary (10+2) education with the following subjects:

• Physics
• Chemistry
• Mathematics

Candidates must also have minimum 50% marks in English either in Class 10 or Class 12.

If a student does not have 50% marks in English at school level, they may still be eligible if:

• They scored at least 50% marks in their Degree examination, and
• The medium of instruction during their Degree course was English


2️⃣ Diploma or Engineering Degree Requirement

Applicants must have completed either:

3-Year Diploma with minimum 60% marks
OR
4-Year Engineering Degree (including lateral entry) with minimum 50% marks

Accepted engineering streams include:

• Electrical Engineering
• Electronics Engineering
• Electrical & Electronics Engineering
• Electronics & Communication Engineering
• Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
• Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering
• Or any other equivalent approved branch


3️⃣ Recognition of Qualification

The Diploma or Engineering Degree must be recognized by:

• State Government
• Central Government
• All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE)


4️⃣ Passport Requirement

A valid passport is mandatory at the time of admission.


ETO Course Selection Process

Admission to the Electro-Technical Officer program is based on the following stages:

• Entrance Examination
• Personal Interview
• Medical Fitness Test

Candidates must successfully clear all stages to secure admission.

Age Limit for ETO Course

Maximum Age Limit: 35 years at the time of course commencement.


Age Relaxation (If Applicable)

Age relaxation is provided as follows:

SC / ST Candidates – 5 Years Relaxation
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) – 3 Years Relaxation
Women Candidates (All Categories) – Additional 2 Years Relaxation


Medical Fitness Requirements

Candidates must be medically fit according to maritime training standards.

Requirements include:

✔ Good eyesight
✔ Proper hearing ability
✔ Overall physical fitness suitable for sea service

Medical tests must comply with the standards prescribed by DG Shipping, Government of India.
