School of Maritime Studies, Bhubaneswar
The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) program is a one-year course designed to prepare students for careers in the merchant navy. The curriculum combines classroom learning with practical training, covering key subjects like navigation, cargo handling, ship stability, meteorology, and basic marine engineering.
After completing academic training, students undergo around 18 months of onboard training to gain real-world experience at sea. The program is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), ensuring it meets national maritime education standards. Graduates are eligible to appear for the Second Mate examination, which is a key step toward becoming a deck officer.

Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
Candidates must meet any one of the following requirements:
Passed 10+2 with a minimum of 65% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM), OR
Secured at least 60% marks in the final year of B.Sc., with Physics studied in any year, OR
Obtained a minimum of 55% marks in the final year of B.E./B.Tech degree
English Requirement:
A minimum of 50% marks in English is required at either Class 10, Class 12, or graduation level.
Important Note:
Candidates who have completed B.Sc. Nautical Science are not eligible to apply for the DNS program.
Students from the NIOS board are also eligible to apply.
Medical Requirements
Applicants must meet the physical and medical fitness standards as per company and regulatory guidelines.
Medical examination will be conducted only by doctors approved by the company and DG Shipping
Candidates must be physically fit for sea service
Eyesight requirement: 6/6 vision in both eyes, or 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other
No color vision deficiency is allowed
Age Criteria
Minimum Age:
Candidates should be at least 17 years old (approximately as on 1st August 2025)
Maximum Age:
Up to 19 years for 10+2 candidates
Up to 22 years for B.Sc. graduates
Note: The exact age cut-off may vary depending on the commencement date of the pre-sea training program.
Fee Structure After Selection
Candidates who successfully meet all eligibility criteria set by the company and DG Shipping, and clear the selection process, will be eligible to join the training program.
At present, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has not officially announced the name of the Maritime Training Institute (MTI). Selected candidates will be allotted a DG Shipping-approved institute through the MSC Training Academy based on final selection results.

Selection Process – Step by Step Guide
Step 1: Registration & Online Exam
Click on the registration link (active from 12th March 2025) and complete your application.
Pay the ₹1000 registration and exam fee to confirm your participation.
After registration, appear for the online written test on your selected date.
Exam Registration Timeline:
Registration Start: 12th March 2025
Last Date to Register: 14th April 2025
Online Exam Dates:
Candidates can choose any one date between 21st to 28th April 2025.
Exam timing details will be shared after the admit card is issued.
Important Instructions:
Candidates must select their preferred interview city during registration (only cities where MSC offices are available).
A device with a camera (Laptop/PC/Tablet recommended) is required for the exam.
The exam will be conducted online with AI-based monitoring and live proctoring.
Candidates who qualify will be shortlisted for the next stage (interview).
Step 2: IMU-CET Application
Apply for the entrance exam conducted by Indian Maritime University (IMU-CET).
Complete the application process by following the official instructions on the IMU website.
