TS Chanakya
About TS Chanakya
Indian Maritime University’s Navi Mumbai Campus, earlier recognized as Training Ship Chanakya, has a rich legacy in maritime education.
T.S. Chanakya was established as a shore-based continuation of the prestigious Training Ship Rajendra and the legendary Training Ship Dufferin, where the formal training of Merchant Navy officers in India began in 1927.
Training programs conducted on T.S. Dufferin, followed by T.S. Rajendra, remained operational until 1993. Subsequently, officer training was shifted to a land-based academy, which came to be known as Training Ship Chanakya.
This institution holds the distinction of being India’s first pre-sea maritime training establishment.
Initially, the academy functioned under the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Mumbai, within the Ministry of Shipping. In 2008, it was brought under the administrative control of Indian Maritime University (IMU).
Later, in 2017, the institute was officially designated as the Navi Mumbai Campus of IMU.
